Journalistic 6
(Waste Products Challenge)

  • Who is your target market?
My target market for my product are those who are in the office or even at home. A pencil/pen holder are helpful so they will not lose their pen and pencil. They can also put erasers, sharpener and board pens. It is appropriate in any working table.

  • Why did you create this product?
I create this product because I know it will be helpful for everyone especially office workers, students and home business people. It is easier for them as well to know where their pencil/pens are. They won't waste time in looking for their pen/pencils.

  • What did you use in creating this product?
I used plastic spoons for the stand and decoration at the same time.Another waste that I used is the cotton buds container. Lastly I used plastic bottle as well for decoration.

  • Where are you going to use this?
The products (pencil/pen holder and flower decoration) can be used in the office table, bed side-table, study table and even beside the telephone with paper so whenever you need to take down notes if someone is calling and giving important details, you don't need to hold the phone just to excuse and get some pen.

  • When is the appropriate time to use this?
Any time and anywhere they can use this holder especially in taking immediate notes. Always ensure that it will always come together with a paper.

  • How did you do this?
I used super glue to stick the spoons around the cotton buds' container. Another waste that I used is the cotton buds' container, which needs a stronger foundation to stand and look more useful. Lastly I used plastic bottle as well for decoration. I cut it into half, the top bit, I made it as a flower decoration and the bottom part, I made it as another form of pencil/pen holder.

Anderson and West's Theory

Anderson and West's Theory of Group Climate for Innovation
Our group made a long gown and a King's cape out of newspaper.

1. Vision - this is where the achievements are shared to the group. This must be attainable and achievable. Moreover, the group are setting the objectives.

Advantages:
  • The group have an idea of what they want to achieve.
  • They are sharing and communicating to build team work.
  • It is realistic.
  • Visualising will serve as an inspiration.
Disadvantages:
  • The group will have different vision and it might cause confusion.
  • Vision is not the same as other's vision.
  • The vision might not be clear.
  • It is not realistic and will not work because of materials and time.
  • Different perspectives and objectives of an individual in the group.
How did your group work together when creating newspaper clothes?
First, we set the target time and visualise the finished product. We are sharing ideas on which we will determine what garment we will produce and do we have enough equipment and materials to produce the garments. In additional, we ensure that it is attainable and realistic therefore we come up into positive vision. We also convert vision into reality.

2. Participative Safety  - it is a stage where you support and trust your team members. Every member can offer their ideas and solutions in a non judgemental climate. Make the group feel safe in a way that they can share their thoughts without discrimination.

Advantages:
  • Broader and variety of ideas are shared.
  • Members will not feel awkward.
  • Everyone will cooperate.
  • The work will be faster and will come into a positive result.
  • Everyone is exerting effort.
Disadvantages:
  • Different thoughts might be confusing.
  • One person might contribute too much whilst other members are out of ideas because that person said it all.
  • Being too comfortable working might lead into an insincerity work.
Was our group safe? Do we create trust and support?
We made our group safe through trusting and supporting each other. We shared different knowledge though we sort of lose communication at first but while we are doing the task, we realised that communication is important. All of us cooperate and do something that will help the group to achieve our group's objective.

3. Task Orientation - this is where the members are committed to excellence. There is a system which monitors and controls the performance of the members. Moreover, it gives emphasis on team and individual accountability.

Advantages:
  • Be able to achieve the goal on time because the team is well-organised.
  • Proper distribution of tasks will make the work easier and quicker.
  • Everyone have their helpful contributions.
  • There will be communication between them.
Disadvantages:

  • The task assigned can be a hard task or confusing for the person.
  • No additional ideas from the team.
  • The given task to that person might not be completed on time because the person is out of ideas.
  • Other members of the group might not be satisfied with the ideas and information an individual have given.
How did your group do task orientation?
We are four in the group so we separate our tasks to make our work faster. Some of us are putting the newspapers together, and some of us are cutting the tape and designing the gown and cape. We have two models in the group who will wear the garments. In additional, we have different tasks to do but we combined our ideas to make things possible and do it on the limited time given.

4. Support for Innovation - this is where the new ideas can be used whereas the innovation is approved of. And the support is practical. This requires the commitment of every member in the group.

Advantages:
  • The highest standard of tasks can be achieved through practical support.
  • Sharing vision and outcomes of the members.
  • Improvements in every work.
Disadvantages:
  • The other members are not supporting each other.
  • Members are not comfortable in working with the team.
  • Some of the members are not vocal,do their tasks individually and don't care whether their team members are struggling.
How did our member support each in innovating?

As a team, we must support each one of us to be able to reach our goal on time. If we didn't share our objectives and goals together, we will not come up into an idea of innovation. We applied support for innovation theory in our group through asking everyone what the best thing that we can do to be able to attain and achieve the task given. One of us is helping out the models to sit down because one of the model is wearing a long gown out of newspaper so if we didn't support her, she might ripped the newspaper while moving by herself. Some of us was supporting and adding ideas to come up into finished product.

Graham Wallas's Theory

What is Creativity?

Creativity is a mental process which involves the generation of new ideas, concepts or new associations between existing ideas or concepts.

Graham Wallas's Theory of creative process
Graham Wallas - Art of Thought

The 4 stages of creative process according to Graham Wallas

1. Preparation - the first stage on which the issue must be defined, observed then study.

Advantages:
  • Can reduce anxiety and fear of not finishing the task.
  • Well researched and planned.
  • Mind and attention are focused on the goal.
  • Easier to reach the goal.
Disadvantages:
  • You are not prepared on what problem you might encounter.
  • Time consuming because your materials are not gathered.
  • Your attention will split into two: problem & goals.

How did you prepare the creative task?
My 5 wastes materials (Bottled water, bottled can, cotton
bud's container, coca-cola box and plastic spoons)
In doing my wastes product activity, firstly I need to prepare or gather wastes then define the problem which is to create something that can be used on a table out of the 5 wastes. I analysed the different wastes I 've got and thinking of something that can be useful out of these wastes.

2. Incubation  - the second stage on which the problem is set aside and new ideas are coming into the person's mind.

Advantages:
  • A series of unconscious, involuntary and mental events are taking place.
  • Thinking realistically.
  • New ideas are helpful and in setting the problem aside, the person will be able to stay calm and think broader.
Disadvantages:
  • During the incubation, we don't intentionally deliberate on a particular problem.
  • Might be out of focus and ideas might not be connected with the issue.
  • Ideas are not as clear as expected.

Facebook is an example of socialising
that I've done and helps me to come up
in some ideas.
Did you leave creative tasks for a while?
After actively engaging with the problem, I set it aside. As I wasn't thinking of the problem, I came into some great ideas while browsing the internet, socialising and watching the television. Sometimes, I am looking for different concepts in objects that I am encountering, either on a daily basis or something that I just see occasionally.

3. Illumination - the third stage on which the new ideas are emerged.

Advantages:
  • The ideas are fresh.
  • Ideas are flashing while your brain is resting and doing other activities.
  • Ideas flashes all of a sudden.
Disadvantages:
  • Ideas can only be gathered if the preparation has been done.
  • Ideas can be not worth to be applied realistically.
  • As ideas flashes in inappropriate time and event, the ideas can be forgotten and disregarded.

When did your idea come to you?
Youtube advertisement about recycling
gives me an idea.
My ideas flashes on my mind from different sources and occasions. One time, I have been watching something on YouTube and then an advertisement appeared about recycling therefore I have some "Aha.." moment where I know it will help me with my wastes materials. Moreover, I have noted some ideas that best fits my wastes materials and how can I make it work.

4. Verification - the final stage on which you will check your ideas and test if it works.

Advantages:
  • You can improve your finished product.
  • You can determine whether the ideas applied worked the way it must be.
  • Enhance or put additional objects that will make the product better.
  • You can determine whether you are satisfied or not.
Disadvantages:
  • There's a possibility that there would be no enough time to verify the finished product.
  • Additional ideas might cause negative reaction to the product.
  • Additional ideas might cause exaggeration.
  • Ideas are not according to the plan or preparation.

How did you test your different ideas before deciding which one to follow?
Verifying to ensure that I'm satisfied with my finished product.
After finishing the finished product which in my case, a pencil and pen holder and a flower decoration, I have check and test whether my product worked or not. At first, the stand of the pencil/pen holder was not balanced therefore I put additional plastic spoons. When it seems to be alright, I test the if the holder can carry more pencil and pen, it does but not more than 8 pens. So I tried to put additional spoons to support the holder. Afterwards, I checked the flower decoration out of the plastic bottle, I figured out that there were some corners that can be dangerous and can possibly cut a finger, so I sharpened it and ensure that the corners are well shaped and doesn't cause any harm.
